Framework I — Crisis Morphology
Underlying Structural Drivers vs. Proximate Causality
Navigating a crisis period requires absolute clarity on how underlying forces produce immediate events. Underlying structural drivers — deep tectonic, macroeconomic, and institutional shifts — shape the probability, velocity, and ultimate direction of sudden, proximate geopolitical events.
As several of these forces converge, volatility compounds, and proximate events that appear unrelated turn out to share a cluster of underlying causes. A proximate event cannot explain why it happened. The underlying causes can. Miss the underlying cause and you hedge against the symptom. Risk architecture is only as good as the causal model beneath it.
